Now, I could get super sentimental and really dig deep and tell you all what I’ve learned (the longest damn list you’ve ever seen), but I wanted to keep it short and practical. Below are the 8 truths that I’ve come to realize over the last year.
1. The Ever Changing Bridesmaid Roster: When I was in high school and even during the beginning of my college career, I was so set on friend groups and nailing down exactly who was going to be standing up with me at my wedding (my imaginary unplanned one, of course). Through the years, friends have come and gone and my trustee lineup of ladies has not only changed, it’s completely different and I still don’t have it figured out. If any of you feel the same, that’s totally okay, because I think as we get older, you are slowly, but surely, finding out what people to trust and what people are just there when it’s convenient for them.
2. You Will Like Your Parents More When You’re Older: Like majority of the middle schoolers and teenagers in the world, I really, really, did not get along with my parents. I kind of figured I would never get along with them either again (hormones are real!!!!!), but now that I am older and out on my own, I need my parents more often than I ever thought I would. So, parents and hormonal humans, you will soon need each other again!
3. Eating An Entire Box of Macaroni Will Effect Your Entire Day: Man, I used to be able to pound down a box of Kraft with no problems and no side effects. Now, I eat a box of macaroni and my insides and outsides feel it – it’s such an awful idea! Oh, to be little again…
4. Danity Kane Never Had The Ability To Compete With The Pussycat Dolls: I was always obsessed with Aubrey O’Day and her tiny sidekick with the big hair, but looking back on their performances, skills, and overall personalities, I don’t know why I ever switched from liking the PCD and choosing Danity Kane. #GirlProbs
5. Intern and Volunteer A LOT: This one’s a bit more serious… I was always told over and over again that I needed to keep adding things to my resume because I will appreciate it when I’m older; I thought only grades mattered for a while, at least. Now that I am in the real world and have a variety of internships under my belt and fairly decent grades, I’m still finding that I could have done more. Keep working hard, people!
6. It’s Okay To Wear Lame Tennis Shoes: I was definitely a Nike kinda’ girl and pretty much refused to wear anything else because it wasn’t “cool”. I sort of jumped around to Reebok and Adidas and wasn’t really feeling it, and then one day something happened. My coworker told me she got the best pair of shoes at Meijer and that they were the most comfortable things she had ever purchased! I thought to myself, hmmm, lame and comfy or cool and pain…. Needless to say, I will be purchasing my next pair of shoes at Meijer.
7. Waking Up Early Is Great: Don’t get me wrong, I love sleeping in just as much as anyone else, but I feel a lot better about myself if I wake up early and get a head start on my day.
8. Not Flossing Is A Bad Idea: When I was younger, I never flossed; I thought I had no time for it. As I got older, I found that you could make time for whatever you needed to do, no matter what it was or how long it was going to take (thanks college). Flossing was definitely not high on my priority list, but when your roommate is a soon-to-be dentist you kind of get weird priorities pushed on you. I began flossing regularly every other day and my teeth instantly became whiter and I had lessened my morning breath/coming-home-from-a-long-day-of-work breath. Also, your health is centered around your mouth so keep that area extra clean!
